on my nightstand :: big little lies

Yet another brilliant page-turner from Mrs. Moriarty… this woman couldn't write a bad book if she tried.  Big Little Lies begins with a bang: someone is dead, but who?  And how could this have happened at such an innocent event as the Pirriwee Public School parent trivia night?  Moriarty takes us back in time to the months leading up to the deadly incident and follows the lives of three Pirriwee moms:  Madeline, who is gregarious and strong minded and likes to stir up trouble; Celeste, who is breathtakingly beautiful and leads a picture-perfect life; and new-to-town Jane, who is far younger than the other school moms but with the epic sadness of someone who has seen many more years.  As Madeline and Celeste take Jane under their wing, the three form a friendship that stirs up plenty of controversy in the schoolyard, but none realizes exactly how much will be stirred up by the arrival of Jane and her little boy.  As is the case with many of Moriarty's novels, Big Little Lies revolves around intertwining relationships and secrets, but the underlying theme here is that the lies we tell to survive - both little white ones and monumental ones - may destroy us in the end.
